About the Work

My paintings are based on themes of color, surface, and space. They are tactile, visceral paintings. You can almost smell the paint and you will want to touch them to feel the buttery surface. The subject matter is a twist on the urban landscape – a minimal approach to architecture using subtle combinations of color and form to create spatial ambiguities and unpredictable shifts of foreground and background.

The paintings are built up in layers with a mixture of oil paint and cold wax medium. The wax provides a matte finish that retains a translucency allowing light to pass through the multiple layers. The mixture is applied with a palette knife and is often scratched back into to reveal variations in color from below. These subtle transitions in color and texture serve to transport the structural elements from the mundane and physical to a symbolic or psychological realm. Themes such as home, solitude and reflection are recurring elements.

About the Artist

A multi-talented artist, Lisa Greenfield lives in the Artist’s Building at 300 Summer Street in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. She is an accomplished artist having participated in multiple exhibitions, received numerous awards, and her work is in numerous private collections. You may have seen her paintings at Fort Point Open Studios, as well as her installation on Boston’s A Street under the Summer Street Bridge, the twinkling lights of “Starry Night”.

From The Culture Trip ~

Lisa M. Greenfield is a Boston artist that creates public art sculptures and installations, as well as paintings, graphic design, and urban planning. Created in conjunction with Daniel J. van Ackere, her most famous work, entitled Starry Nights, is an installation under a bridge in Fort Point; thousands of LED bulbs light up the underpass. Though the project was only supposed to be up for eight weeks, residents enjoyed it so much that it will now be permanent for the next 10 years (from 2014 to 2024). Greenfield has also had several temporary public artworks in the Fort Point area, including House of Cards and Walking on Water.

Each year we honor one artist who has an outstanding body of work created in Fort Point, but may not be able to open their private studio for the event.

This year Lisa Greenfield has been invited to be the FP3 Gallery’s Guest Artist during FPAC’s Open Studios 2019.
