Event Details

300 By Design is a collection of paintings by five artists who live and work in The Artist Building at 300 Summer Street in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. Iwalani Kaluhiokalani’s paintings reclaim familial and historical lineage by referencing dance practice, dance histories, sensory ethnography, and ideas of paradise, which play as signifiers of her Eurasian and Pacific Islander heritage. The essential mystery of wood, the knots and weathered grain of its history, are the inspiration for Mario Kon’s work, which relates to drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture, while employing these as tools for navigation during the creative process.

Michael Bourque has had an award-winning career, pursuing parallel interests in design, painting and photography; his acrylic paintings are a thought-provoking mixture of abstraction, repetition, and improvisation with colors which move according to the rainbow that makes up natural light. The imagery in Christine Vaillancourt’s work evokes contemporary industrial urban design and architecture while the motifs draw inspiration from patterns and designs of the 1950s; the bold geometric forms are not hard-edged, but rather imperfect, soft-edged, revealing the human hand. Alison Darrow’s work evokes moments when fleeting focus is rewarded: when the small, familiar, and ordinary everyday miracles of color and light that we’re usually too busy to notice — evanescent quiet glories, odd juxtapositions — are suddenly illuminated and flare into something other, and wondrous.
