Distillations is a juried show of FPAC members that gathers together works emerging from a process of reduction—of boiling down, filtering through, and clarifying experience until only its most resonant elements remain. Like the alchemical act from which the exhibition borrows its title, each artist represented here engages in a practice of refinement: separating signal from noise, essence from excess, memory from distraction.

Creativity is a process of transformation. Marks are drawn, stitched or cut, then erased, redrawn, restitched and recut while ideas are considered, altered and refined. Over time — an hour, a day or months, the work’s path and meaning become clearer.
By the time a work is shown, its making and meaning become part of a larger story. Draped from a ceiling, hung on a wall or lain on a floor, it is both a record of our labors and an echo of ourselves. Artifact and talisman, part of us and independent from us, what we have made is now deeply steeped in memory.
Incorporating a broad range of materials, processes, and ideas, the work of Deborah Davidson, Audrey Goldstein, Randal Thurston and Debra Weisberg reflects on how a dedicated studio practice based on iteration and curiosity evolves over time.

Visitors to Open Studios can tour artists’ studios in 4 artist buildings in the Fort Point neighborhood, as well as galleries and pop-up exhibit venues. All buildings are in easy walking distance of each other. Free participatory art-making activities for all ages will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Performance and special events are also part of this year’s Open Studios.

FLOAT takes its animating spirit from Mary Oliver’s poem “The Ponds,” in which the poet wishes “to be willing / to be dazzled / to cast aside the weight of facts // and maybe even / to float a little / above this difficult world.” Conceived as a vivid, liberating embrace for the community, the exhibition offers a deliberate sanctuary from the heaviness of contemporary life — a spark of joy to carry visitors from summer into fall. The five artists interpret colors, shapes, and textures drawn from the natural world: petals caught in a breeze, shells swirling in surf, the colors of sunset captured in a jar, a tangle of clouds. United by a penchant for abstraction and movement, they diverge in their choices of material and process. Together, their work makes a case for joy as serious matter — not escape from the world but a way to be fully in it. To float is to be buoyed, to give weight over to something larger and trust it to hold you. FLOAT offers that suspension: a room to breathe in, to wander, to let color and form do their quiet, expansive work. Working Coast – Below the Line brings together three local FPAC Art Space Reception: August 28th | 5-9 PM Working Coast – Below the Line brings together three local artists that explore the Northeast coastal culture of New England as a form of craft. Centering maritime labor —the exhibition considers how histories of labor are shaped with and by the ocean’s changing landscape. Situating the coast as both workshop and archive, the works draw on materials such as weathered tools, drifting buoys, and tide-worn surfaces to evoke a culture influenced by labor and ecological forces. Through these material traces and embodied practices, the exhibition reflects on how craft, the body, and environment intersect in the making of the working coast.
