I have been working in a variety of media all my life, with formal training at the Boston Museum School. Music and science have broadened my perspective: as student of biochemistry and then drawing teacher at MIT, I have been intrigued by seeming polarities such as that between science and art, and between inspiration, intuition, and hard work. Favorite artists are Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and a group of painters in the West Country in England. The color and energy of my paintings include interplays of order and chaos, realism and abstraction. The more realistic landscapes and figures begin with a balance of discipline and play, while the more abstract include imagery from a lifetime of looking. Abstract and realistic works are created over the same time period; my intuitive transformation normally starts with thoughtful exact observation. Experience, skill, instinct, and luck help me tell the truth about what I see. I seek to directly communicate joy in painting and drawing with light and color.
