Everything is a source of inspiration! I am a deeply curious, armchair naturalist, hiker, traveler, book-a-holic, great lover of life. Nature clearly provides the biggest inspiration for my work but so do materials, dreams, situations, weather, places I visit, other painters and writers – especially poets – and anyone who loves and respects Nature. I have an all-abiding passion for art and beauty and explore those concepts with paint and found objects. At first glance the paintings may seem radically different from the sculptural works however they are definitely linked. As I find inspiration for paintings I always come across interesting materials like stones, bones, bits of wood, feathers, etc. When I’m out wandering I stay open and receptive to everything and out of it comes art. Overall the greatest influence on my paintings are the elements – especially storms.

The sculptures grow out of playing with all the bits of flotsam and jetsam I find in my travels. I enjoy building and manipulating materials every bit as much as I love to paint. While the paintings are visual recordings of places I’ve been, the sculptures reflect a range of ideas from conceptual results of our irresponsible and thoughtless attitude towards nature to wry humor.

My painting process is usually to begin with a sketch that is surrounded with narrative and notes about color, the sketch is either refined or moves to watercolor, then to canvas. All my paintings are done in the studio from sketches and memory. As for the sculptures the materials I come across in my hikes frequently provide instant inspiration for a work and commonly one piece will foster ideas for future works.

I have exhibited widely over the US and Canada, been a grateful recipient of grants from the Rochester Arts Council, New York State Council on the Arts and Massachusetts Cultural Council, enjoyed artist-in-residences in Newfoundland and in the Dune Shacks at the Cape Cod National Seashore.

This website is a small sample of the work I do, if you wish to see more or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
