May 10 – June 14, 2013

Julie Klein was a passionate travel photographer residing at the Artists’ Building in Boston until her untimely death on April 25, 2013.

Julie Klein’s images, though captured in widespread locations around the globe, are concerned with the particularity of persons and locations rather than the exotic. Unmistakably, her sense of empathy shines through every image. Julie’s ability to record character and gesture of her subjects is equaled only by her uncanny composition skills at the moment of capture.
This exhibition was curated by Julie’s friends and neighbors at The Artists’ Building, as a loving tribute to her memory.

Spring Unfolding
May 1-31, 2013
Opening Reception Thursday May 16th, 5-7pm
Made in Fort Point will be featuring Spring Unfolding, hand made books by Mary McCarthy for the month of May. “In northern climates winter takes up half the year. As Spring approaches people start to get restless for warmth and the light green buds of a new season.” This work is a series of paper collage books and poetry. The books are designed on the 17th Century Japanese screens, which unfold to illustrate the magical stages of plant growth and the return to life, manifested each spring.

Mary McCarthy has been making one-of-a-kind and limited edition books for over thirty years. Her medium is collage, incorporating paper with various other materials. The subject matter varies from nature, social consciousness, history, and the universal qualities of all people.

April 10- April 21, 2013

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 18th, 5:30-8 pm

Underneath it all: Desire, power, memory & lingerie is coming to Boston NEXT WEEK from April 10th through April 21st at the Fort Point Artist Community Gallery, 300 Summer Street, M1 Boston MA 02210. Lingerie has a fascinating place in our society and this exhibit artfully exposes the layer of clothing closest to our skin. The Artists’ reception will be on Thursday, April 18th from 5:30-8pm.

Underneath it all is a nationally touring exhibit showcasing the work of ten women artists from around the U.S. who use, interpret, and create lingerie. These artists utilize “womanly” arts, such as embroidery, quilting, sewing, and patterning, but employ unusual materials such as paper, eyeglass lenses, poodle fur and seashells. Other artists elevate bras and panties into portraiture and sculpture. The work ranges from satirical to political to deeply personal.

Four of the artists live in the Boston area: recycled material sculptor Ingrid Goldbloom Bloch, hand sewn paper garment creator Diane Bronstein, digital collage artist Joanne Kaliontzis, and painter Lisa Knox. The other artists are painter Amanda N. Simons, paper garment artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, sculptor Laura Ann Jacobs, printmaker Julie Harris and book artist Miriam Schaer.

The exhibit began touring last July in Minneapolis at the Textile Center, moved to the Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona in January 2013, and last month at the Cotuit Center for the Arts in Cotuit, Massachusetts. The show is scheduled to open this September at the ISE Foundation in New York City.

Earth, Sky & Flame April 1-30, 2013

Opening Reception April 11th, 5-7pm

Made in Fort Point will be featuring Earth, Sky & Flame, the paintings of Philip Manna for the month of April. In the artist’s words:

“It is widely accepted that matter and energy mingle. Matter is energy captured – energy fixed for a given time. Beneath the rock solid world what we hold in our hands is an uncertain quantum world, an invisible world of energy and possibility. Sitting by the light and heat of a fire the boundary between what is matter and what is energy dissolves – the flame drawing us closer to understanding our relationship to all created things.”

Philip Manna was a long time science educator with the Boston Public Schools. He now works part time for the Aspire Institute at Wheelock College and teaches science for the Steppingstone Foundation’s College Success Academy. His artwork has been purchased for display by a number of non-profit organizations and private collectors.
